In this project we were given a fictional story-line in which a characters were murdered. The story goes like this. A man with many children who had done many bad things just got out of jail and changed his name to Captain Cornball. To celebrate his birthday just after his release, he decided to host a dinner party and invite people that did not know who he was but whom he had each effected. The party was fun but suddenly, the sky darkened and when the sky cleared, Captain Cornball was found with a steak knife in his back. We took an array of evidence (blood, fingerprints, a note and suspect medical records) and ran tests on them. Tests on the "blood" included finding the type of blood each sample was and running the blood through electrophoresis to see DNA fingerprinting. Then we ran the note found at the scene of the crime to determine what type of pen was used to write said note. This involved dipping a piece of special paper with a pen smear in alcohol. This expanded the dash to determine the spectrum of colors that made up that one simple color. Our results showed that two suspects had the pen used to make the note on their person. Next we picked up a fingerprint from various items found at the crime scene and looked at the type of fingerprint, either a loop, whirl, or arch comparing this with the fingerprint type of the suspects. Finally we looked at each suspects family history and medical history. We used this to determine who the victim actually was, how the suspects were connected to him and how this would lead to a motive and finally find any genetic diseases that may have caused them to think irrationally. This narrowed it down to two suspects, Norma Nanny and Sam Stubs. Both of these people matched the evidence found at the scene of the crime, had a lot of motive and had genetic diseases that could cause them to think differently. This was a really cool project because we got to solve a really cool mystery while using techniques normally reserved for film. It also cleared up some misconceptions that film has fooled us into believing. Turns out lifting a fingerprint is REALLY hard and testing DNA is not only time consuming but also not 100% accurate. Matching DNA is a game of statistics and if done incorrectly, could imprison the wrong suspect. Reflecting back on the project, I realize that this is really hard and we needed to go over the evidence more. We thought that Sam Stubs was the murderer but latter we realized that his blood type could also be Captain Cornball, the murder victims, blood. When trying to explain the evidence we had to the judge, we should have been a bit more clear. We kind of assumed that he knew a bit about the case when we should have explained the case in more detail. The only thing I wonder about the project is the actual murder. Some of the evidence seemed to be explained by other factors. For example, since this was a dinner party, we know all the suspects were at the crime scene so wouldn't all of them leave DNA and fingerprints.
